Today’s post is dedicated to my favorite time of the year, Football Season. But more specifically, College Football season! Watching sports is the only time I can justifiably yell at my television without being considered bonkers, and boy I’m all here for that! This post caters to those of us who are too poor or too far from our favorite college teams to watch in the stands. To my fellow couch fans, this one’s for you! My three must-haves for College Football season.
1. Team Spirited Attire
Are you a true fan if you don’t wear clothes that have your favorite team’s name plastered all over them?! Maybe, I don’t know, the jury’s still out. But I’ll tell ya something, it doesn’t hurt to show some school spirit in the form of clothing. If you are an avid fan, chances are you already own a jersey, t-shirt, baseball cap, etc. Just make sure you put that on the day of the game. Who knows, you could be the reason your team makes the playoffs. Probably not, but who are we take chances against what the universe wants for us?!
If you are in need of some spirited attire, you can visit your online University Bookstore or Academy. Heck, I bet you can even find some stuff on Amazon and with two-day shipping, who can beat that?!
2. Snacks and Drinks
The typical regulation college football game lasts around 3-4 hours and can be even longer with overtime. It’s important to make sure you are properly sated and hydrated. How else are you gonna have the energy to gloat and celebrate post-game when your team dominated?! You need sustenance! The snack is dependent on your preference and your associated food allergies and dietary requirements.
In our family household, the crowd-pleasers are both crockpot recipes because you can set em and forget em. And trust me when kickoff starts the last place you want to be is stuck in the kitchen! So onto the two recipes, we swear by in this house. (For my recipes check out this section of the blog)
Crockpot Cocktail Weenies
This one is so easy but wins people over every time! You’ll need Lil Smokies and Barbecue sauce.
- Take one or two packages of Lil Smokies, drop them in the bottom of the crockpot
- Cover with your favorite barbecue sauce (we like Rufus Teague Touch O Heat because of the bite)
- Set the crockpot on high for 2-3 hours until fully warmed.
This one involves a little extra effort but it is still doable for a total novice. You’ll need ground beef (or turkey), Velveeta and a can of Rotel.
- Slice the Velveeta into cubes. Set aside
- Brown the ground beef or turkey
- Take the Velveeta cubes, can of Rotel and beef and place it all in the crockpot
- Cook on low until cheese is fully melted (about 2 hours)
- Serve with tortilla chips
Selecting your drink for the game is paramount! A soda or beer could make you feel bloated, full and uncomfortable. A liquor drink could have you blacking out before the third quarter. And wine, well you could be crying at half time.
I personally will stick to White Claw and sparkling water. After all in a recent poll by Insiders, White Claw is law. And thus it was written. And thus it shall be. (If you drink alcohol, drink responsibly and if you’re not at home, plan a sober ride).
3. Avid Fan Friends
Because what’s the fun in rabidly yelling at your television by yourself?! I mean, it’s pretty fun but not nearly as fun as doing it with friends who are just as cuckoo for college football as you! Plus you’re gonna need support and back up. People to celebrate the wins and mourn the losses with.
If you don’t have friends close, I like to text play-by-plays with my dad and my old college roommate. It makes me feel connected and although we are not in the same room, we can still celebrate wins and mourn losses together.
So there you have it. The quintessential items you need to have a kick a College Football season. What would you have on your must-haves list? Let me know in the comments below.
