I’ve got a velvet crush on you
No matter what era you were born in, we all get oddly nostalgic sometimes for the things that remind us of our childhoods. If you were a 90’s kid like me, then you get excited about potential Spice Girls reunion tours, the fact that Britney Spears is still totally killing it, that General Mills brought back Oreo O’s, (I’ve eaten two boxes) and that certain fashion trends are making an epic comeback.
Now don’t get me wrong, some trends should be left in the past because of their impracticality or pure discomfort, (rubber jelly sandals, I’m looking at you). Yes, the 90’s may be gone, but velvet is back, baby and in a huge way! If you’re like me, you’ve snatched up as much velvet as you can find. If not, then I’m going to show you some of my favorite finds!

The reason I love velvet is not only because it feels luxurious, but because no matter what size, you can rock this trend! Petite ladies, I’m talking to you specifically! In the remainder of this blog, I’m going to take you through the different types of ways you can wear this trend and look like a total rock star, boss babe!
The Velvet Bodysuit and moto-jacket (A velvet two fer!)
This combines two of my favorite trends right now, velvet and bodysuits. I love the versatility of this one because it can be dressed down with a nice cardigan for a casual day look (linked here), or dressed up for a fabulously fun night out on the town.

There is something about the combo of leather and lace. It makes me feel like the perfect blend of biker babe, and feminine. This black velvet and lace bodysuit is from Express and it fits true to size, (I’m wearing a small for reference). Only thing I will caution: this particular bodysuit fits similar to a thong. No crassness here, just brutal honesty, if you don’t want to be pulling this out of your you-know-where all day, I would just encourage you to leave it unsnapped. When it’s tucked in, you can’t tell the difference.

The perfect faux leather leggings
For me, I am very particular about faux leather leggings. They have to feel and look similar to leather. Some brands, in my opinion are too high shine and bag at the knees essentially looking like you cut two leg holes in a trashbag and labeled it, “high fashion”. These high-waisted moto leggings from Francesca’s are everything i could have wished for. They fit true to size (I’m wearing a 26 for reference) and pair perfectly with this delicate, lace and velvet bodysuit for a perfect night out.

I added a crushed velvet moto jacket to feel even more biker babe chic. I also love the way this jacket fits because of the slight crop fit so it is the perfect length for us smaller ladies. Couldn’t find it in black but i linked it in a lovely slate gray color at the end of this post. Add some platform boots because, hey, you’re petite and we could all use an extra inch, or six.
The Velvet Romper
If you are a petite lady like me, then you know how hard it is to find a romper that fits right. And if you don’t know what I’m talking about, then you can read about my general disposition towards them here. When i first saw this romper at a boutique in The Heights, I was so in love! The blush color, the crushed velvet, everything about it was love at first sight.

This outfit is perfect for a brunch date with the ladies, drinking too many mimosas and spending way too much money on avocado toast, (*sigh guess I won’t be buying a house anytime soon). I paired this romper with some fabulous brown platform boots from A New Day, a current fashion line at Target, but you can just as easily rock this with some over the knee boots to ensure warmer legs. (Will link my favorite pair this season below).

The Velvet Leggings
I remember owning a pair of these when I was a kid. They were burnt orange and had peace signs all over them. I owned the playground in those leggings, so when I saw velvet was coming back, I immediately went on the search for some leggings. Because as noted previously, leggings are awesome! I didn’t have to search far before finding the perfect pair. These ones are from Target and they were very affordable. They fit true to size, (I’m wearing a XS for reference). However, if you are between sizes or are curvier on the bottom, i would size up.

These leggings can be worn in a lot of ways. You can dress them up for a holiday party. You can also bum around in them binge watching Netflix and drinking wine at your house. (Whatever floats your boat, no judgement here ;)) I decided to pair them with this adorable purple tunic sweater for a more casual look. You honestly can’t go wrong with a nice long sweater and leggings. Add some platform black boots, or black suede over the knee boots to complete the look.

Velvet is for every body!
Obviously, this isn’t an exhaustive list. There are thousands of combinations to rock velvet this season. Whether your aesthetic is trendy, feminine, or bum-like (guilty sometime) you can use one of these pieces to spice up your wardrobe and take back a piece of the 90’s. Note: all of the items have been linked below. If I could not find the exact item, I have linked something similar.
Let me know how you feel about the velvet trend. Is it a heck yes or no should have left that in the past? Tell me in the comments and let me know which other trends you’re living for right now. You might just see them in future blog posts!
